Happy Monday! And happy day 7 of our 12 Days of Self-Love Challenge! This past week we have taken time out of our busy schedules to add in one act of self love each day. To kick off this week on a healthful note, today I’m challenging you to start your day off with an alkalizing morning drink: warm water with lemon.
Drinking warm water with lemon and ginger (and sometimes raw honey) is an Ayurvedic ritual to stimulate the digestive system for the day. Drinking warm water with lemon is also a great way to hydrate first thing in the morning, and to bring a dose of alkalinity to your body. If you drink caffeine in the mornings, I also recommend adding some Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to your lemon water. ACV not only is extra alkalizing, it also contains beneficial bacteria to improve digestion and increase your immune system.
Simple Alkalizing Morning Drink Recipe
1 cup warm (not boiling) water
1/4 lemon, juiced
1 TBS Apple Cider Vinegar (choose an ACV with “the mother”)
Warm water to just below boiling, add to your favorite mug and squeeze in lemon juice and add ACV. Enjoy while starting your morning slowly and healthfully.
If you drink coffee first thing every morning I invite you to either try to drink warm water with lemon before your first cup of coffee, or if you drink multiple cups of coffee each morning, try drinking a cup of warm water with lemon before your second cup of coffee.
Side note: if you love taking “shots” of straight up ACV in the morning, I encourage you to start watering it down to protect your teeth. Even though ACV and lemon are alkalizing internally to the body, they are acidic and can be harmful to your teeth if you don’t water it down.
