I’m inspired to write about this topic having come off trail and first crave a green juice, followed by a vitamin supplement. Having been traveling and on the move for the past month (and in reality the past year from being a wilderness guide on and off trail), finding ways to maintain my health is something that is really important to me. It’s easy to stay healthy when I’m in a basic routine, but becomes way more challenging once I’m on the move. These are my main tips to stay healthy when you are camping and traveling a bunch!
My top five tips for staying healthy while on the move:
1). Take time for yourself
This is so critical if you are traveling or working with people constantly. As an introvert, the main way I can reenergize myself during the day is periods of being alone. This is really hard when I’m on trail guiding 8 students and working with two co-guides. I’m constantly surrounded by people for 8 days at a time. The main way I can get the recharge I need is to wake up before the group, and take some time in the morning to myself. I really enjoy using this time to meditate and journal, or just sit in silence and soak in the beauty around me. If mornings aren’t your thing, pick a time during the day that you most enjoy and make it your own! Listen to music, go for a walk, find some peace away from the crowds. This can be really helpful in maintaining inner wellness and being able to give yourself what you need.
2). Take a whole-food multi-vitamin
Even when I’m not on trail, but am traveling I know my vegetable intake significantly decreases from what it is when I’m home cooking my own foods. Finding a good quality vitamin with whole foods can be supper helpful in filling in the gaps in your diet while you’re traveling. I’m not saying supplements can replace real food in the long run, but if you are traveling for a month or so, it’s important to keep your nutrient intake up and supplements can be a great way to do so!
3). Travel green superfood packets
I’ve been obsessed with Amazing Grass Green Superfood supplements for a while now, and continue to crave and love them both on and off trail. This is a great way to keep up your green, phyt0-nutrient intake while traveling when you might not be making green smoothies and eating as many greens as usual. It feels so refreshing and cleansing to have access to a green juice, even when you’re far away from home. Plus, you can get them in travel packets which are super convenient!
4). Homemade trail mix
If you’re hiking and camping a bunch, trail mix is such a great option for a healthy, energy giving snack. My favorite homemade mix right now is a combination of almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, goji berries, and raw cacao nibs. So good!
